I've recently receive a mail from Pcpitstop.com, Which explained the ways to speed up your computer. There are many tweaks given by them, and some of them requires editing the registry, but i won't include that here, because if you are not pro/confident enough, modifying the registry can be a real mess, and can make your comp unbootable.
Cleaning
- Remove un-used Programs Remove all the programs that you were not using or it's not important from your system. Such as when you have multiple types of audio players, why don't you just use one of them since both of them is doing the same job. And get rid of those program which you accidentally install or you don't know where they came from. If you're not sure what does that particular program does, u can googled it up, it just take a second to do that. You can do this by accessing the Add/Remove programs from Start >> Control Panel >> add/remove programs
- Remove unused Desktop Icon When you install something, some might don't really care what are all the things that were installed. Normally desktop shortcut/icons are automatically created when you install a program. But some programs that you don't really use it regularly, such as converters, antivirus and such. Just Keep the one that you'll be clicking everyday, such as Internet Explorer or Morzilla Firefox. To delete the shortcut, just highlight it, right click and delete.
- Use a Registry Cleaner Now, your registry is full of some files that are left there for many years without any roles or uses. When you install something, they will create an entry at the registry, and when you uninstall the program, it will still remained there. This is why you must clean your registry over time, because you had installed and uninstalled many things beforehand. The programs i recommend for this is the CCleaner, which is free and easy to use. There are many stuffs you can do with ccleaner, which i'll create a seperate entry about this ccleaner. Can be downloaded here : CCleaner
- Remove unused Windows Components There are many XP components that people don't use them. Such as the Games, windows messenger which we never gonna use them. To access, go to the add/remove programs place then click on the add/remove windows component, just 2 icon below the add/remove programs tab. Please take note that after you uninstall it and wanted to re-install it, you might need to use your Win XP CD to do so
- Defrag Your Hard Disk It's always a good idea to defrag your hard disk after you install/uninstall a big files or move a large chunk of files all over your drives. Defragment will re-arrange your files on your hard disk to make sure that the files are easily accessible when it's executed on the next time. To defrag , ClickStart/ All Programs/ Accessories/ System Tools/ Disk Defragmenter
- Modify System Restore If you are going for the fastest you can achieved, you can turn off the system restore, but it's not recommended. The best is just to lower the disk space use by the system restore to the range of 1300MB and 1500MB. To do this, go to Start/ My Computer / Properties / System Restore / Setting. And move the slider according to you.Another article is coming real soon, keep checking for the part 2, which will cover more about things in your computer!
